ViziLite Oral Cancer Screening
This year alone, over 30,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer. Out of these 30,000 individuals, roughly half will be alive in 5 years, according to the Oral Cancer Foundation. Sadly, this staggeringly high death rate correlates with the fact that oral cancer is typically discovered late in its development. An early diagnosis of oral cancer can mean the difference between life and death. Dr. Scott Brown and the Family Dentistry team uses an advanced diagnostic tool for oral cancer screening at our McDonough-based practice. With the ViziLite®oral cancer screening system, Dr. Brown can even identify abnormal tissue growth before it has a chance to develop into oral cancer.
How ViziLite®Works
After conducting a visual examination, Dr. Brown has his patient rinse with the ViziLite®Pre-rinse Solution. The solution makes the nuclei of the cells more visible. When illuminated with the ViziLite®hand-held light stick, the nuclei of any abnormal cells will appear to glow so that Dr. Brown can document the locations of lesions on a map of the patient’s mouth.
Who Should Undergo Oral Cancer Screening?
The American Cancer Society recommends that men and women over the age of 18 be screened for oral cancer annually. When detected early, oral cancer treatment is over 90 percent successful, easier, and less invasive.
